Choose based on your experience level and specialisation interest. The graduate certificate builds foundational project management skills in as little as eight months, the graduate diploma extends this to mid-level expertise in as little as 16 months, and the master builds advanced, system-wide capability in as little as two years. Healthcare and leadership specialisations are available at the graduate diploma and master levels.

The graduate certificate is a short, focused program of four courses. It suits professionals new to project management, or those wanting to test postgraduate study before committing to something longer.

The graduate diploma is a mid-tier qualification of eight courses. It suits professionals ready to specialise in healthcare or leadership while building end-to-end delivery skills.

The master's is the most advanced qualification, with 12 courses covering program and portfolio management. It suits professionals ready to lead complex, system-wide change.

At a glance:

  • Graduate certificate: four courses, as little as eight months, foundational skills
  • Graduate diploma: eight courses, as little as 16 months, specialise in healthcare or leadership
  • Master’s: 12 courses, as little as two years, advanced program and portfolio capability

Example: A health professional moving into project delivery might start with the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management, then progress to the Graduate Diploma in Project Management (Healthcare) as their responsibilities grow.

The leadership specialisation builds skills to lead complex projects across any industry, covering strategic leadership, ESG and digital transformation. The healthcare specialisation builds skills specific to healthcare delivery, covering governance, service improvement and project implementation for clinical settings. Both are available from the graduate diploma onward.

The leadership specialisation suits professionals who want project management skills that transfer across any sector, rather than being tied to one industry.

The healthcare specialisation suits professionals working in, or moving into, healthcare settings, where governance, compliance and clinical context shape how projects are delivered.

Both specialisations share the same core project management foundation. The difference comes down to which industry-specific courses you complete, and which career direction you're building towards.

At a glance:

  • Leadership specialisation courses: Strategic Leadership, ESG for Projects, Digital Transformation in AI, Project Change Management
  • Healthcare specialisation courses: Healthcare Governance for Project Management, Healthcare Project Implementation, Health Service Improvement, Project Change Management
  • Both available from the graduate diploma and master's

Example: A policy professional aiming for senior transformation roles across any industry might choose the leadership specialisation, while a health professional moving into project delivery might choose the healthcare specialisation.

Yes. The Graduate Certificate in Project Management doesn't lock you into a specialisation, so you can progress into either the Healthcare or Leadership specialisation at the graduate diploma or master's level, based on which direction suits your career.

The Graduate Certificate in Project Management covers core project management skills only, with no specialisation courses attached. This gives you room to decide on a specialisation later, once you've had time to work out which direction fits your career goals.

At the graduate diploma or master's, you'll complete all four courses within your chosen specialisation, whether that's healthcare or leadership. Your project management graduate certificate courses count towards this study pathway, so you won't need to repeat them.

At a glance:

  • Complete the Graduate Certificate in Project Management (no specialisation required)
  • Progress to the graduate diploma or master's
  • Choose the healthcare specialisation, or
  • Choose the leadership specialisation

Example: A project support officer unsure whether to specialise in healthcare or leadership might complete the project management graduate certificate first, then decide once they've built foundational project management skills and have a clearer sense of their career direction.

Yes. From either the project management or healthcare graduate certificate, you can choose either specialisation when you first enter a specialised tier, whether that's the graduate diploma or, if you enter directly there, the master's. Once chosen, that specialisation carries through to the end of your qualification.

Specialisation choice happens at your entry point into specialised study, not at a fixed stage. For most students, this is the graduate diploma, since that's typically where specialisation begins.

Once you've chosen at that entry point, the choice is locked in. If you specialise at the graduate diploma, you can't then switch when you progress to the master's.

At a glance:

  • Choose your specialisation when you first enter a specialised tier (usually graduate diploma, or master's if entering directly there)
  • Your chosen specialisation carries through to the end of your qualification
  • No switching once chosen (e.g. can't switch between graduate diploma and master's)
  • Completed graduate certificate courses still count, regardless of specialisation

Example: A student who completes the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management but develops a stronger interest in cross-industry leadership can choose the leadership specialisation when they enter the graduate diploma. Once made, that choice carries through to the master's.

Yes. If you complete the Graduate Certificate in Project Management, you haven't committed to a specialisation yet. When you progress to the graduate diploma, you can choose the healthcare specialisation and complete its four courses there.

The project management graduate certificate covers core project management skills only, with no specialisation attached. This means you can decide on a specialisation once you've had time to explore your options, rather than committing upfront.

Specialisation choice happens at the graduate diploma or master's level, depending on which level you enter at. Your project management graduate certificate courses still count towards your total once you move into the healthcare-specialised graduate diploma or master's.

At a glance:

  • Start: Graduate Certificate in Project Management
  • Choose: healthcare specialisation at the graduate diploma
  • Complete: all four healthcare specialisation courses at graduate diploma
  • Your project management graduate certificate courses still count towards your total

Example: A project support officer who starts with the project management graduate certificate, then discovers a strong interest in healthcare delivery, can choose the healthcare specialisation when they progress to the graduate diploma.

The graduate certificate builds foundational project management skills in four courses, completed in as little as eight months, and is available as a Graduate Certificate in Project Management or the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management. The graduate diploma extends this to eight courses and mid-level capability in 16 months. The Master of Project Management builds advanced, system-wide expertise across twelve courses in as little as two years.

The graduate certificate suits professionals new to project management, or those testing postgraduate study before committing to something longer. You can choose the Graduate Certificate in Project Management, or the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management if you already know you want a healthcare focus.

The graduate diploma builds on this foundation with end-to-end delivery skills, and is where you formally choose a specialisation such as healthcare or leadership.

The master's is the most advanced qualification. It extends your specialisation with program and portfolio management, preparing you to lead complex, system-wide change.

At a glance:

  • Graduate certificate: four courses, as little as eight months, foundational skills. Choose Project Management or Healthcare Project Management for an early healthcare focus
  • Graduate diploma: eight courses, as little as 16 months, choose a specialisation
  • Master's: 12 courses, as little as two years, advanced program and portfolio capability

Example: A health professional new to project delivery might start with the graduate certificate to build core skills, then progress to the graduate diploma to specialise in healthcare and complete the master's to build the strategic capability to lead system-wide healthcare transformation.

Yes. The graduate certificate, graduate diploma and Master of Project Management are all AIPM-endorsed, across both the healthcare and leadership specialisations. The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management has not yet been reviewed for endorsement, as it sits under its own separate program code.

AIPM endorsement means a program has been assessed against the institute's standards for quality and industry alignment. Across UNSW Online's project management suite, this endorsement applies broadly, covering both specialisations at graduate diploma and master's level.

The one exception is the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management, which sits under its own distinct program code rather than the originally endorsed one.

At a glance:

  • Endorsed: Graduate Certificate in Project Management
  • Endorsed: graduate diploma and master's, all specialisations
  • Not endorsed: Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management

Example: A student who completes the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management, then progresses to the graduate diploma, will hold an AIPM-endorsed qualification from that point onward, even though the graduate certificate itself hasn't yet been reviewed for endorsement.
